Gyeonggi Province explained that it organized the visit event to provide startups in the province with an opportunity to find new perspectives and possibilities through sharing successful overseas cases.
On the afternoon of the 8th (local time), Governor Kim Dong-yeon visited Viz.ai, a unicorn company located in Silicon Valley and engaged in a discussion with the founder and CEO Chris Mansi.
The medical image diagnosis system developed by Viz.ai is a medical and patient care platform that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) -- where artificial intelligence helps to analyze and diagnose medical images.
It helps to detect stroke within seconds of a brain CT scan, identifies suspected patients, and immediately notifies them to a specialist's mobile phone, helping to quickly respond and treat at-risk patients.
AI became a hot topic after being approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2018, and is currently being used in more than 1,400 hospitals in the U.S. and Europe.
With a corporate value of $1.2 billion USD (1.6515 trillion KRW), it is a representative unicorn company in the U.S. healthcare sector.
A unicorn company is an unlisted startup company with a corporate value of more than $1 billion USD (1 trillion KRW) and founded within 10 years.
Governor Kim said encouragingly, “There are two purposes for today’s visit. One is to talk with the startup representatives who came with us, and share good dialogue and experiences with Unicorn Company Viz.ai.”
Startup representatives from Gyeonggi Province proactively asked questions and continued a passionate discussion for about an hour.
Seo Eun-seok, CEO of Creple -- AI based visual intelligence solution company, asked about how private information like medical information was collected and how they conducted business activities. Other representatives asked about how to overcome obstacles in obtaining and persuading investment companies and how to handle crises.
In response to CEO Seo's question, CEO Chris Mansi said, "I visited a doctor who dealt with many stroke patients and thought -- wouldn't this technology (artificial intelligence diagnosis technology) be necessary? Eventually I persuaded him that I could do it and received the data." He advised, “It is important to initially recognize the people who need your skills.”
국제교류협력 강화와 해외투자 유치를 위해 북미지역을 방문 중인 김동연 경기도지사가 도내 새싹기업(스타트업) 대표와 함께 실리콘밸리 유니콘기업 가운데 하나인 비즈에이아이(Viz.ai)를 찾아 성공 경험을 공유하고, 협력방안을 논의했다.
이날 만남에는 인공지능 관련 도내 기업인 크레플(주), 에이블제이 주식회사, NHN CLOUD, ㈜새론솔루션, ㈜에이아이포블록체인 등 5개 사가 함께했다.
경기도는 성공한 해외사례 공유를 통해 도내 스타트업에 새로운 시각과 가능성을 찾을 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 위해 방문 행사를 마련했다고 설명했다.
김동연 지사는 현지시각 8일 오후 실리콘밸리에 위치한 유니콘기업 비즈에이아이를 방문해 설립자 겸 최고경영자인 크리스 만시(Chris Mansi)와 만나 의견을 나눴다.
비즈에이아이에서 개발한 의료영상 진단 시스템은 인공지능(AI)을 활용한 의료, 환자 돌봄 플랫폼으로 인공지능이 의료영상 분석과 진단을 돕는 기능을 한다.
뇌 CT 촬영 몇 초 이내 뇌졸중 여부를 감지해, 의심환자 식별 후 즉시 전문의 휴대전화로 알려, 위험환자에 대한 신속한 대응과 치료를 도와준다.
2018년 미식품의약국(FDA, Food and Drug Administration) 승인을 받은 AI로 화제가 되었고, 현재 미국과 유럽 1400개 이상의 병원에서 이용하고 있다.
기업 가치가 12억 달러(한화 1조 6515억원)로 미국 헬스케어 분야의 대표적인 유니콘기업이다.
유니콘기업은 기업 가치가 10억 달러(=1조 원) 이상이고 창업한 지 10년 이내인 비상장 스타트업 기업을 말한다.
김 지사는 이날 “오늘 방문 목적은 두 가지가 있는데 하나는 함께 오신 스타트업 대표들과 유니콘기업이 된 비즈에이아이와 대화하며 좋은 경험을 함께 나누는 것”이라며 자유로운 대화를 유도했다.
이에 경기도 내 스타트업 대표들은 적극적으로 질문에 나서며 1시간여 동안 열띤 대화를 이어 갔다.
인공지능 기술 기반 시각지능 솔루션 업체인 크레플(주)의 서은석 대표는 의료정보라는 개인정보를 어떻게 수집할 수 있었는지, 어떻게 영업활동을 했는지 등에 대해, 다른 대표들은 투자사를 설득하는 방법, 위기를 극복하는 방법 등에 대한 질문을 쏟아냈다.
크리스 만시 최고경영자는 서 대표 질문에 “많은 뇌졸중 환자를 다루면서 ‘이런 기술(인공지능 진단 기술)이 필요하지 않을까’라고 생각하는 의사를 찾아가 ‘제가 할 수 있다’고 설득해 데이터를 공유받았다”면서 “처음에는 자신의 기술을 필요로 하는 사람들을 찾는 게 중요하다”고 조언했다.
At the end of the conversation, Governor Kim mentioned his second reason visiting Viz.ai, “In Gyeonggi-do, we are conducting an AI project to provide services in writing health reports for the elderly and periodic inspection of dementia risk groups through AI algorithms,” and he continued, “It is still a pilot project, but I would like to hear opinions on whether Viz.ai’s technology can be applied or utilized in such services.”
CEO Chris Mansi followed by and expressed a positive opinion, “I think it’s a very good idea. I am particularly interested in dementia treatments.”
Prior to visiting Viz.ai, Governor Kim Dong-yeon visited the San Francisco headquarters of the Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) at 2 p.m. He had a conversation with Natalya Guseva, the head of financial market initiatives, and Se-moon Yoon, the head of network and partner innovation.
Sebastian Buckup, Director of the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center of the World Economic Forum (WEF), and Kim Hyundae, Director of Gyeonggi Province's Future Growth Industry Bureau, also participated in the conversation via video conference.
The Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) is an initiative at the World Economic Forum (WEF) to bring about global cooperation and joint responses to various issues in a period of rapid change in science and technology represented by AI technology. It is an organization established and operated in consultation with the country or region.
Since it was first established in San Francisco, USA in 2017, 15 centers are in operation around the world, including in Michigan, Texas, Japan, India, UAE, and Israel, and three additional centers in Germany, Vietnam, and Qatar are scheduled to open this year.
Gyeonggi-do is currently discussing with the WEF about installing a 4th Industrial Revolution Center in the province and is continuing efforts to come up with the best plan through close discussions with the Gyeonggi-do Provincial Council.
Sebastian Buckup, director of the Fourth Industrial Revolution Center at the World Economic Forum (WEF) said, “We have not yet fully confirmed the nature of the center being discussed for establishment in Gyeonggi-do, but we are discussing it to focus on supporting startups.” He continued, “There has never been a center dedicated to startups, so we expect it to have great significance and play a special role.”
Governor Kim responded, “I am pleased that this is the first center that focuses on startups. If you have any good examples or suggestions from other centers, I hope you will continue to contact me.”
투자사를 설득하는 방법에 대해서는 “사업 초기 막연하게 느껴질 수 있는 AI 기술을 통해 실제 생활의 문제를 해결할 수 있다는 걸 강조한 것이 도움이 됐다”, 위기 극복 방법에 대해서는 “모든 과정이 도전이기 때문에 어느 때가 가장 어려웠다고 말하기 어렵다. 계속해서 뭔가를 극복해야 한다”고 강조했다.
대화 말미에 김 지사는 비즈에이아이 방문의 두 번째 이유에 대해 “경기도에서 AI알고리즘을 통해 노인들의 건강 리포트 작성, 주기적 치매위험군 점검 등의 서비스를 하는 ‘늘봄AI케어’사업을 하고 있다”면서 “아직은 시범사업이지만 이런 서비스에 비즈에이아이의 기술을 적용하거나 활용할 수 있는지 의견을 듣고 싶다”고 밝혔다.
이에 대해 크리스 만시 최고경영자는 “굉장히 좋은 아이디어라고 생각한다. 특히 치매치료에도 관심이 많다”며 긍정적 의사를 표현했다.
비즈에이아이 방문에 앞서 김동연 지사는 이날 오후 2시 4차산업혁명센터(C4IR) 샌프란시스코 본부를 찾아 나탈리아 구세바 금융시장 이니셔티브 책임, 윤세문 네트워크 및 파트너 혁신 책임 등과 대화를 나눴다.
이날 대화에는 세바스찬 벅업 세계경제포럼(WEF) 4차산업혁명센터 총괄 국장과 김현대 경기도 미래성장산업국장도 화상으로 참여했다.
4차산업혁명센터(The Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. C4IR)는 AI 기술로 대변되는 과학기술의 급격한 변화 시기에 다양한 이슈에 대한 글로벌 협력과 공동 대응을 끌어내기 위해 세계경제포럼(WEF)에서 각 국가 또는 지역과 협의해 설립‧운영하는 민관협력 거점 기구다.
2017년 미국 샌프란시스코에 최초 설립된 이후 미국 미시간‧텍사스, 일본, 인도, UAE, 이스라엘 등 전 세계 15개 센터가 운영 중에 있으며 금년에 독일, 베트남, 카타르 3개소가 추가 개소를 예정하고 있다.
경기도는 4차산업혁명센터를 도에 설치하는 방안을 놓고 현재 WEF측과 협의 중이며 경기도의회와의 긴밀한 논의를 통해 최선의 방안을 도출하기 위한 노력을 지속하고 있다.
세바스찬 벅업 세계경제포럼(WEF) 4차산업혁명센터 총괄 국장은 “경기도에 설치 논의 중인 센터의 성격을 아직 완전히 확정하지는 않았지만, 스타트업 지원에 중점을 두는 방향으로 협의하고 있다”면서 “명시적으로 스타트업을 내세운 센터가 지금까지 없었기 때문에 큰 의미가 있고 특별한 역할을 할 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다.
김 지사는 이에 대해 “스타트업에 집중하는 첫 번째 센터라는 점에서 기쁘게 생각한다”면서 “다른 센터의 좋은 사례나 제안 있으면 계속해서 연락을 주면 좋겠다”고 답했다.
